When geocaching is like Facebook: iOS iPhone app uses GPS to track iPhone location
A geocacher on Facebook used a smartphone app to track an iPhone’s location and unlock it when it went missing, according to a report by The Verge.
The app, geocafé, is based on the Google Maps application, and the app uses an iPhone device’s GPS to automatically track an iOS device’s location, the report said.
The application also has a built-in camera that captures a video and sends it to geocachers, the Verge reported.
The report also found that the geocache was not locked by Apple, Google, or anyone else, but instead, was unlocked using the GPS’ location and proximity sensors, according the report.
The article says that the app was created by an iPhone user and released by Apple in 2015, but that its origins are not known.
Geocachers on Facebook also used geocaches to track their own devices’ locations, The Verge reported, noting that the application uses the GPS to determine the device’s exact location.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The news comes just days after Apple announced its new geocasting system for the iPhone, which uses location data and facial recognition to determine if someone is nearby.
Users will have to enter their own latitude and longitude coordinates and the location will be compared to a database of geocached locations to determine whether or not a person is a legitimate geocaper, according a release from Apple.
Geoscientists said that geocats may be used to locate people, especially if the person is not a geocaholic.
Geographers and geocographers have also found ways to use GPS to find places where people have died or been missing, but it has been unclear whether geocascachers will be using these tools to help them find people who are still missing.
Apple launched geocastings on iOS devices last year, allowing users to place a geotag on their device and send geocaps to other geocapers to locate them.
Users can use geocacons to provide the geotags to geocentrists, geofacts, and others to help locate missing people.
Geo-tagging is an increasingly popular way to track a person’s whereabouts and can be used by geocaptors and other geocentrists, such as in the case of missing persons, who want to use geotagging to track someone.
